Prof. Sianne Ngai: The Gimmick as Capitalist Form
For all its unsubtlety, the gimmick manifests in remarkably diffused ways throughout the culture of mature, crisis-prone capitalism. What are some of the traps it lays for those trying to analyze it? How is it related to other capitalist forms of appearance? In this final lecture we will reflect on tensions between the critical worldview implied by the impoverished gimmick and dominant trends in contemporary theory—and on methodological difficulties surrounding the analysis of everyday aesthetic categories.
